Giulio Tremonti, Italy’s finance minister, laughed off rumours of his imminent resignation on the 28 July 2011 as he came under growing pressure to clarify his ties to a former aide Marco Milanese and a group of businessmen under investigation for suspected corruption involving state tenders and official appointments.

Mr Tremonti’s control of public spending and an austerity budget he piloted through parliament in July 2011 has been generally credited by analysts as a major factor in shielding debt-burdened Italy from the repercussions of the Greek sovereign debt crisis.
