Summary: Bilateral treaty signed between France and Germany in January 2019, designed to reaffirm and deepen the friendship between the countries. It builds on the Élysée Treaty signed by French and German leaders in 1963. Further information: The treaty was signed on 22 January 2019 in Aachen (Aix-la-Chapelle) by leaders Emmanuel Macron and Angela Merkel. It aims to deepen cooperation and convergence ahead of the main challenges facing Europe, to further develop military cooperation and joint capabilities, to expand Europe's permanent presence in the UN Security Council, to further bilateral cultural and language understanding, to improve integration between the two economies. This document adds to the Élysée Treaty of 1963, which played an important role in the historic reconciliation between France and Germany after the Second World War by rejecting the idea of the two countries as sworn enermies. Both treaties are seen as important pillars to guarantee stability and commitment within the European Union. |
