Publishers Abstract:
Discusses, with reference to the shortcomings of the legal framework governing EU immigration and citizenship law, how the EU approaches concepts of 'otherness'. Examines theoretical concepts of the other, the gate-keeping strategies for controlling immigrant populations, and the distinctive passages to naturalisation which involve 'revolving door' mechanisms, including obtaining legal status, checking integration, securing long-term residence and obtaining EU citizenship. Suggests how such an approach hampers the formation of a multifaceted EU identity, and how this might be addressed.
