Background and further information:

The agreement was signed in 2015 and the targeted individuals and entities were still to be designated as being responsible for or complicit in actions or policies that threaten the peace, security or stability of Mali.

Sanctions against designated parties include restrictions on admission of targeted individuals (ban on entry to the European Union) and the freezing of assets in the EU belonging to the targeted individuals or entities, in addition to prohibiting persons or entities established within the EU from making funds available to them.

The Council of the European Union transposed into legal acts the provision of United Nations Security Council resolution 2374 (2017), which allows sanctions to be imposed on those actively stymieing progress in implementing an agreement on peace and reconciliation in Mali.
