Article abstract:

The European Union, a unique example of successful economic integration, aspires to become a major international relations actor. Recently, the Union has been trying to develop its own military capabilities in order to play a greater role on the international scene. This essay serves as an introduction to the process of framing a security and defence policy in Europe. It explains the evolution of the European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP), describes how it plans to tackle the challenges ahead and emphasises Turkey's position in terms of this new dimension in European security.
