A political row over jobseekers from the ten new Member States joining on 1 May 2004 has erupted in the UK with the Conservative Party and the right-wing press warning the UK will be overwhelmed by a flood of immigrants from these countries. The UK Prime Minister, Tony Blair, met with senior Ministers on 17 February 2004 and agreed a deal to introduce tough new measures to curb access to benefits for migrants from Eastern Europe.
