President Alexander Lukashenko was declared the overwhelming winner of the Presidential Election held in Belarus on 19 March 2006. Alexander Milinkevich, the main opposition candidate, called for a re-run, as thousands of protesters filled a square in Minsk, amid claims of vote-rigging.
