Further information:

The Report shows the European Union continues to pursue a transition to a low-carbon society. It highlights the need for stakeholders across societies to take over the driving seat of the project and confirms that energy transition is not possible without adapting the infrastructure to the needs of the future energy system.

To address this, the Commission adopted in parallel a Communication on electricity interconnections and a third list of Projects of Common Interest (PCIs).

+ Communication on strengthening Europe's energy networks [COM(2017)718]

Background information:

The Energy Union was launched in February 2015 with the adoption of the Strategy Framework. It was since then highlighted as one of the priorities for the Juncker Commission.
