Background and further information: The Economic Partnership, Political Coordination and Cooperation Agreement between the European Community and its Member States, of the one part, and the United Mexican States, of the other part entered into force on 1 October 2000. By the Act of Accession, Croatia undertook to accede to the existing agreements concluded or signed by the EU with third countries, by means of protocols concluded with the countries concerned. In 2012 the Council of the European Union authorised the opening of negotiations with the third countries concerned with a view to concluding the relevant protocols. The negotiations with Mexico being successfully concluded, in December 2017 the European Commission presented proposals for Council Decisions on the signing and conclusion of the Protocol. The signing of the Protocol was approved on 22 May 2018 by Council Decision (EU) 2018/2024 and took place on 27 November. The conclusion of the Protocol was approved on 8 April 2019 by Council Decision (EU) 2019/573. |
