Report of a discussion called 'Russia Re-Emerging, the end of the liberal order' organised by the German Marshall Fund of the United States and the German Institute for International and Security Affairs on the 21 October 2015. The German Marshall Fund of the United States (GMF) hosted Dr. Hanns Maull, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik, Dr. Marie Mendras, Sciences Po and Dr. Andrew Moravcsik, Princeton University as discussants. The panel was moderated by Dr. Dušan Reljić, Stiftung Wissenschaft und Politik. Dr. Ian Lesser, Senior Director for Foreign and Security Policy at GMF and Executive Director of GMF’s Brussels Office and Mr. Theodore Reinert, Transatlantic Academy welcomed the audience. The discussion, held under the Chatham House Rule revolved around the Ukrainian crisis and the challenges that Russian Federation poses to the European security architecture. The discussants also focused on the sanctions imposed on Russia by the West and the possible ways to rebuild the pan-European security. The panel was followed by a question and answer session touching on a number of issues such as the impact of the sanctions on the Russian economy, the possibility of lifting the sanctions in the near future, Germany’s role in establishing security in Europe, the future of Azerbaijan and Republic of Moldova inside the Eastern Partnership in the context of the latest developments that took place in these two countries. |
