Animal rights campaigners have found a splendid champion in French Radical Energy MEP Christine Barthet-Mayer.

Such is her concern for livestock that a commendably comprehensive European Commission proposal for EU legislation to halt unwarranted cruelty was deemed not comprehensive enough.

The plan is to ban systematic mutilation, described as “tail-docking, tooth removal, de-horning, trimming of beaks and wing-clipping of queen bees”. Good enough? Not quite.

Barthet-Mayer tabled an amendment in Strasbourg this week expanding the description to include “operations such as attaching elastic bands to the tails of sheep...” This is apparently what farmers do to newly born lambs to make their tails drop off as the animals grow - a practice the average sheep would doubtless like to try out on farmers, given the chance.
