This White Paper, published on 15 July 2009, sets out the UK's first ever comprehensive low carbon transition plan for becoming a low carbon country. It describes how the UK will meet legally-binding ‘carbon budgets’, requiring a reduction in emissions of 34% by 2020 and at least 80% by 2050. Actions to cut emissions in the main emitting sectors - power, transport, homes, workplaces, agriculture, are outlined. Papers published alongside the Plan include: 'The Low Carbon Industrial Strategy' in which the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills and the Department of Energy and Climate Change set out the steps being taken to harness the jobs and growth opportunities across the UK economy in the shift to low carbon. 'The Renewable Energy Strategy' in which the Department of Energy and Climate Change details how the UK will hit its target of getting 15% of energy (electricity, heat and transport) from renewable sources by 2020. 'Low Carbon Transport: A Greener Future' sets out the contribution that transport will make to the UK's efforts in reducing emissions. |
