Date: 17/12/1998 Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl appeared to enjoy himself at the Vienna summit, despite being on the sidelines of an event he dominated for 16 years. Kohl was there to receive 'honorary citizenship' of Europe in recognition of his achievements. But he insisted that he did not want to be considered as a “monument” to Europe. According to the 'official' translation of what he said next, Kohl then explained: “You know what happens to monuments when the ceremony is over: the birds sit on them...” It could have been a mishearing, but the sanitised version ended with the words: “The birds sit on them and 'do something'.” |
