Abstract: Student communities in many cities are more often looked upon as elements that deflate property values, increase rowdy behaviour and disrupt previously stable communities. Too seldom are they considered to be a strategic resource for urban development. This work seeks to redress that imbalance of opinion, doing so by presenting case studies of nine European cities. The book is one of a series published under the auspices of EURICUR, the European Institute for Comparative Urban Research, Erasmus University, Rotterdam. Chapter one sets out the methodology of the research and the main issues of the study. Chapter two begins the set of case studies with a study of Birmingham, followed by chapters on Eindhoven, Helsinki, Lille, Lyon, Munich, Rotterdam, Utrecht and Venice. Chapter eleven presents the conclusions and identifies cases of best practice which are seen as transferable among the cities in the study. The work will interest researchers and policy makers in the fields of town planning, urban renewal, higher education and community relations. |
