Abstract:
The articles in this special issue of JCER are a series of new papers by authors from institutions across Europe, and ranging from Doctoral Candidates to Professors. They examine the role played by the EU in international environmental negotiations, looking at the role of the EU in climate change negotiations at the Copenhagen and Cancun Conferences (Groen, Niemann and Oberthür), at climate change negotiations post-Kyoto (Fernandez-Martin) and at the role of the Rotating Presidency of the EU (Delreux).

They also examine EU energy policy (Dupont and Oberthür), and the role played by the EU in developing a marine policy and in the protection of the marine environment from pollution (Carpenter).

The articles comprise:

+ The EU as a global leader? The Copenhagen and Cancún UN climate change negotiations by Lisanne Groen, Arne Niemann, Sebastian Oberthür

+ European Union and international negotiations on climate change. A limited role to play. Rosa María Fernández

+ The rotating Presidency and the EU’s external representation in environmental affairs: the case of climate change and biodiversity negotiations by Tom Delreux

+ Insufficient climate policy integration in EU energy policy: the importance of the long-term perspective by Claire Dupont and Sebastian Oberthür
