Abstract: The controversial proposal for a Directive regulating expulsions from EU Member States was the subject of more serious discussion during the Portuguese Presidency of the EU’s Council in the second half of 2007. Unlike the previous German Presidency, the current Presidency did not try to remove almost the entire content of the Directive, although the latest version of the text under discussion (dated 7 December 2007) would still generally have set a significantly lower standard than the Commission’s initial proposal.
