where, after a record-breaking 674,000 applications in 1992, the number has fallen steadily, reaching 305,000 in 1994. The former Yugoslavia continues to produce the most applications, followed by Romania and Iran. A new Eurostat report says that data for the first six to nine months of 1995 suggests the volume of applications is still declining, although a lack of comparative data makes it impossible to give an overall figure at this early stage.
