Turkey may have the greatest potential as a regional player in its neighborhood, but it needs the United States and the EU now more than ever. Simultaneously, the inverse is also true for its transatlantic partners. A formalized strategic dialogue focused on the post-Ottoman space as opposed to the European order might be able to overcome or bypass some of the obstacles that have prevented progress on Turkey-EU accession talks. The time for a permanent trilateral transatlantic framework for Turkey’s neighborhood has come.
