Book abstract:

A Pan-European panel of contributors is probably essential for a work entitled 'The Meaning of Europe' for which the subtext of the title approaches reality more closely. Today absolutes are dissolved and perception is everything and the construction of national identities within Europe is often how the nation is perceived to relate with its European partners.

Over the course of the book the meaning of Europe is examined from the perspective of thirteen different national identities; from the stalwart European nations such as France and Italy to the traditionally 'us' and 'them' approach of the British. Even the approach of the candidate countries to Europe is covered as well as Russia's relations with Europe. Old identities such as a Christian Europe are examined and revealed to be outdated and themselves lacking in absolute identity as the schisms within Christianity suggest. Similarly, democracy might be recognised as an essential element of Europeanism but, as with Christianity, there are varying forms of democratic constitutions. These conflicting views of national identities have looked to the banner of Europe for an identity long before creation of the European Union. It is evident that the concept of Europe will continue to play a vital role in the creation of a national identity.

The volume will have significant interest for students and scholars in European Studies and International Affairs.
