The legal framework and social consequences of free movement of persons in the European Union:

This book marks thirty years of progress in realising the free movement of persons in the European Union. The book's origin is from a conference at King's College London sponsored by the European Commission and jointly organised by the Immigration Law Practitioners' Association and the Centre of European Law at King's. It is concerned not only with Treaty rights, with legislation and with the legal mechanisms for giving effect to free movement; it is also concerned with the social consequences The book is in two parts. The first part is entitled The European Community: thirty years of free movement of persons and the second part is entitled Third country nationals in the European Union: coming to terms with partial rights. The division reflects the divide between nationals of the Member States and the 13 million third country nationals who are long-term residents in the territory of the Union but who are excluded from many of the benefits of citizens of the Union.

Each chapter is authored by an expert in their field, a mixture of both academics and practitioners.

Volume 3 of the Studies in Law series issued by the Centre of European Law, the series aims to publish studies in the broad area of European Community Law and Comparative European Law, and being of interest to the legal practitioner, academic and government and Community official.
