For more than half a century the headscarf issue has struck at the heart of Turkey's ideological foundations. In spite of the recent policy changes from the Higher Education Board, covered women still face opposition in universities. Moreover, they are blocked from teaching and other professions, including all government jobs, and are absent from Parliament. The article delves into the deep currents running beneath the conflict and offers some prescriptions for the future.
