Abstract: This work presents a wealth of information on voting behaviour, cabinet formation, electoral and constitutional arrangements in thirteen Central and Eastern European countries from 1989-90 onwards. The work opens with a chapter on the diversity of post-Communist Europe which addresses the consolidation of democracy in the former communist states. Chapter two seeks to identify social divisions and political cleavages at work in Central and Eastern Europe. These are followed by the thirteen country specific chapters - Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Slovenia, Romania, Bulgaria, and, new to this edition, Croatia, Serbia and Moldova. Each chapter includes detailed examinations of elections, the formation of governments, electoral systems and constitutional arrangements. All the information has been updated, and in some cases completely rewritten, since the publication of the first edition in 1998. The work closes with concluding remarks from the editors. The work will interest scholars and students of political science, comparative politics, European studies and political history. Sten Berglund is Professor of Political Science, and Joakim Ekman is Doctor of Political Science, both at the University of Örebro, Sweden. Frank H. Aarebrot is Professor of Comparative Politics at the University of Bergen, Norway. |
