SMEs constitute over 90 percent of Europe's tourism enterprises. Therefore, this Seminar aimed to study the situation of these businesses, both in the Western Europe and in the Central and East European countries emerging from transition, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses and the challenges they face. Various countries presented the recent experience of their tourism SMEs while other speakers addressed specific issues such as finance, marketing, products SME co-operation, sustainability, government assistance and regulation, etc. Particular emphasis was placed on the impact of new technology and globalization and , in the case of the transition economies, efforts under way to build an enterprise culture and to facilitate the creation of SMEs
