Summary:The two medical agencies of the EU, the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control and the European Medicines Agency alongside the European Commission played an important role in the response of the EU to the COVID-19 pandemic. We found that, although not fully prepared for a protracted pandemic, both agencies generally managed well. The European Commission and the agencies are in the process of implementing the lessons learned from the pandemic. However, we identified some remaining shortcomings. We make recommendations to help the agencies to be better prepared for future health emergencies. |
