Summary: The European Union is a living organism in a constant process of evolution. From six founding Member States in 1950, it grew to 15 by 1995. Now, at the start ofthe new millennium, it is poised to nearly double its membership again. Thereare challenges in bringing in this new wave of members - the countries of central and eastern Europe, Cyprus, Malta and Turkey. The EU has to make sure theaccession of new members does not dilute its achievements. But there are alsoenormous opportunities. The new century offers the chance to make a truly Europe-wide European Union, that fully reflects the values of peace, democracyand shared prosperity, and celebrates the rich diversity of the continent. |
