Book abstract:

Frequently described as an 'economic giant but political dwarf' the European Union is increasingly assuming the traditional roles assigned to Member States and, aided by the phenomenon of globalisation, it is also gradually starting to establish itself as a significant player in international affairs. But what is the true position of the European Union in the world system at the dawn of the 21st Century? This is the fundamental question tackled in the book, which is the second in the Collections series published by the Polish Institute of International Affairs that tackles issues from the world system perspective.

This Collection, as noted by the editor, is more about stimulating a debate than providing exhaustive answers but it does succeed in discussing the meaning of 'world system' and examining a variety of issues concerning the EU's role in that system. The future of international conflict in a world society where a significantly enlarged EU exists is discussed in detail with reference to the well-known contrasting theories devised by Fukuyama and Samuel Huntington. This is followed by a discussion of whether it was economic or security reasons that led to the evolution of the EU and an analysis of the role of the EU in future global security. The next paper examines unemployment in Europe from the perspective of the world system, arguing that European unemployment is influenced by the dynamics of the world system. The final three papers focus on the phenomenon of globalisation and its role in the process of European integration, with specific emphasis on the planned enlargement of the EU in the years ahead.

Students of European politics and international relations should find this book helpful.
