This revised, updated and largely rewritten sixth edition of a well-established publication is intended to provide an overview and give a broad understanding of the European Union. In addition it guides readers towards sources of further information. The nine sections cover the way the EC/EU works; a history including key treaties; decision making; individual policies; developing Europe, including regional policies; external trade and international relations. The last chapter includes sources of information, useful addresses, e-mail addresses, web sites and helplines, together with lists of free EC publications available and some useful books. Alex Roney is a lawyer specialising in EC matters. The late Stanley Budd was Scotland's representative at the Commission of the EC.
