The European Parliament this week gave its backing to legislation

to improve health and safety standards at work in a bid to reduce occupational diseases which affect some 10 million employees at a cost of 96 billion ecu a year. The draft legislation, which now awaits Council of Ministers' approval, is designed to protect workers from the risk of exposure to carcinogens and introduces a limit on the use of benzene.
