The integration of the European Union and domestic political issues:
The purpose of this volume, by a distinguished academic based in the USA, is to examine the determinants of the process of regional integration among the participants of the European Union. Two factors play a vital role: first, the number of participants has increased from six to fifteen, with a higher number in prospect. Second, administrative changes may be made in the institutional structures of the EU that may affect the internal and external decision-making processes in the years to come.

The book first looks at the evolution of regional integration theories and the theory of democracy and its influence on EU integration. Subsequent chapters look at the economic outlook in the EU and its impact on the progress of political development; the contribution to regional integration of the European Monetary System and the Single Currency; the direction and impact regarding EU integration of public opinion; and the contribution of the EU's Common Foreign and Security Policy to the integration process. The final chapter offers conclusions about the possible future of the regional integration process of the EU.
