The European Court of Justice:
The European Court of Justice (ECJ) has only gradually attracted the wider attention that has accompanied the Commission and the European Parliament since their inception. While a substantial legal literature on the ECJ has evolved aimed at those practising and studying law, there has been a marked lack of writing on the role of the ECJ aimed at the non-legal scholar. This book by Professor Renaud Dehousse (partly based on a French language title by the author) is aimed at this audience - to show the considerable contribution of the ECJ to the European integration process. The book illustrates how the Court has been able to 'constitutionalise' the founding treaties and to influence policy decisions, and shows ways in which the legal battleground has been used by private parties and public institutions alike. It also examines why the Court's active role has not encountered greater opposition and analyses the implications for the Court of current issues and challenges confronting the European Union.
