This EPC Commentary was published just prior to the European Council, Brussels, 25-26 March 2010. The author says that the Council should not be side tracked by the Greek debt crisis from tackling Europe’s main economic problems.

The Council was intending to discuss Europe 2020, the EU’s new economic strategy, which says Zuleeg, should be the key mechanism to get Europe out of the crisis. As an important fact is to persuade Member States of the value of achieving its targets, perhaps the ‘Greek tragedy’ highlights the limits of purely national actions and could be a triggering factor for more decisive action at EU – and national - levels.
