Date: 01/05/1997 to the European Parliament to free up extra resources to pay for 97 new officials, as part of her drive to boost the effectiveness of her reinforced Directorate-General for consumer affairs, which has taken on responsibility for food safety in the wake of the BSE crisis. Ninety-six staff will be moved from other departments and 57 posts will be made available under existing budgetary resources.
