to the European Parliament to free up extra resources to pay for 97 new officials, as part of her drive to boost the effectiveness of her reinforced Directorate-General for consumer affairs, which has taken on responsibility for food safety in the wake of the BSE crisis. Ninety-six staff will be moved from other departments and 57 posts will be made available under existing budgetary resources. Bonino has also set out her thoughts on how organise the EU's scientific committees and proposed renaming the Irish-based inspection office The Office for the Control of Food Safety.
