The European Commission unveiled its long-awaited policy paper on the precautionary principle yesterday (2 February)

The document seeks to define the frequently misunderstood concept and defend it against attacks from industry, the US and the World Trade Organisation. The principle is used to justify bans on dangerous products where scientific evidence is insufficient or inconclusive but where failure to act might cause damage to the environment or to human health.
