Germany’s social democrats suffered a disastrous result in the German federal elections on the 24 September 2017, securing only 20.5 per cent of the vote: their worst result in the post-war period. Björn Bremer wrote that the party would have a great deal of soul-searching to do over the next four years, and that the left-wing of the party was likely to try and reassert itself as it sought to become a strong voice of opposition to the next government.
