Abstract:

This book contains the reports of the International Conference held in Brussels on 9 May 2000 which was organised by The Royal Flemish Academy of Belgium and the Society for Social and International Co-operation, in collaboration with The Council of Europe, The European Union and the International Labour Organisation. The aim of the conference was to investigate how the benefits of economic and technological market driven developments can be maximised without compromising social rights and increasing inequalities in wealth.

The book consists of 14 papers including: The Social Challenges of the 21st Century and Fundamental Social Rights; The European Social Charter; The European Social Charter and the CEE Countries; The European Social Charter and the European Union; The Right to Work and Freedom of Work; Social Europe and Labour Law - The Role of the European Social Charter; The Right to Strike and Lock-out in English Law; European Trade Unionism and the European Social Charter. Annexes include relevant official documents from Council of Europe and The European Union.

Roger Blanpain is Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and Brabant President of the International Society of Labour Law and Social Security. The contributors are academics and practitioners form Europe.
