The Commission has approved 470 million EURO in funding for transport and environmental projects in the ten central and east European countries applying for EU membership

The schemes include road and rail projects and programmes designed to improve water treatment and waste management standards. The funding is aimed at bringing the applicant countries' standards up to Union levels by the time they become full members of the bloc.
