The Commission has adopted new rules for the granting of subsidies in the sea transport sector

These guidelines will replace an obsolete rule-book agreed eight years ago and are aimed at promoting the development of shipping in the Union. The new rules will allow member states to give tax breaks and social security contribution reductions to shipping firms as long as these only apply to seafarers who pay their taxes in an EU country.
