The Euro 2016 football tournament began in France on the 10 June 2016 amidst a context of the threat of a terrorist attack and labour unrest. French President Francois Hollande said he would do what was needed to ensure protests did not spoil the tournament. In the early days of the tournament violence by rival fans at the England v Russia match on the 11 June 2016 in Marseilles dominated headlines. However, subsequently, the main talking point was the success of smaller footballing nations such as Iceland and Wales beating more illustrious teams. Another smaller country, Portugal, went on to win Euro 2016 on the 10 July 2016. |
