Eurydice published in October 2012 the annual update of Teachers' and School Heads' Salaries and Allowances in Europe 2011/12. The new report shows that a growing number of European countries have now reduced or frozen teachers' salaries in response to the economic downturn. Teachers in Ireland, Greece, Spain, Portugal and Slovenia are the ones most affected by budgetary restrictions. However, the report also highlights that cuts are not universal across Europe. In the Czech Republic, Poland, Slovakia and Iceland, for example, teachers' salaries increased since mid-2010 thanks to national reforms. The report also reveals that while basic entry-level teacher salaries are generally unattractive, actual salaries, which include allowances for e.g. overtime, are in fact close to the maximum statutory pay for teachers in many countries. Teachers' and School Heads' Salaries and Allowances in Europe 2011/12 presents these findings, among many others, by means of a comparative overview and country specific information covering 32 European countries (EU Member States, Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Croatia and Turkey). The report covers full-time, fully qualified teachers and school heads at pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and upper secondary education levels. Main topics include: + Decision-making bodies responsible for fixing teachers' salaries + Salaries in the private sector + Minimum and maximum statutory salaries relative to GDP per capita and in relation to actual salaries (comprised of statutory salaries plus allowances) + Salary progression in relation to experience; + Latest increase/decrease in teachers purchasing power and the effect of the economic crisis + Different types of allowances and the decision-making bodies responsible for their allocation. |
