After the US Commerce Secretary, Don Evans, said that the US would not drop its tariff penalties on European steel imports, the European Union announced on 19 July 2001 that it would launch more than a dozen separate World Trade Organisation cases in an effort to overturn US duties on European steel companies. The WTO had ruled in 2000 that the US duties may be illegal under world trading rules.
