The emergency beef talks between agriculture ministers in Luxembourg produced a largely-unheralded diplomatic triumph for Sweden.

It was the first such meeting for new Swedish Farm Minister Annika Ahnberg and she was determined to come away with something to tell her nation. When it was all over, she duly announced that Swedish firms would, from now on, be able to label their meat to show that it was indeed Swedish and that it did not come from the UK.

Well done Annika - except that voluntary labelling of origin has always been allowed in the EU, which is probably why no other minister saw fit to herald such a victory. But ministers must get their plaudits where they can, and Annika has taken no time to recognise the fact. She is bound to go far.
