Summary: Joint Communication published by the European Commission and the High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy on 10 June 2020, which assesses steps to fight disinformation around the COVID-19 (coronavirus) pandemic and proposes a way forward on the matter. Further information: The pandemic was accompanied by an infodemic. A flood of information about the virus - often false or inaccurate and spread quickly over social media - is seen as potentially undermining an effective public health response. The infodemic feeds on people's most basic anxieties, and gaps in knowledge have proven to be an ideal breeding ground for false or misleading narratives to spread. This Joint Communication focuses on the immediate response to disinformation around the coronavirus pandemic, looking at the steps already taken and concrete actions to follow, which can be quickly set in motion based on existing resources. Action builds on the Action Plan against Disinformation and responds to the call of the European Council and Council of the European Union, as well as concerns of the European Parliament. |
