Summary: Initiative undertaken in the context of the Baltic Energy Market Interconnection Plan (BEMIP), which aims to synchronise the Baltic States' electricity system with the continental European network by 2025. On 28 June 2018, regional political leaders signed a Political Roadmap to conclude the the synchronisation of the electricity grids. The BEMIP High-Level Group endorsed on 14 September the decision to formally launch the synchronisation process. Further information: The initiative aims to tackle electrical isolation in the region, given that the national grids were still connected to the Russian and Belarusian systems instead. The Political Roadmap defined the process and put forward a concrete solution for synchronising the Baltic grids with the European network. The BEMIP High-Level Group's endorsement allowed for the Polish and Baltic States' Transmission System Operators (TSOs) to launch a formal procedure to undertake the synchronisation. This is managed by the European Network of Transmission System Operators (ENTSO-E). A set of projects were launched in the framework of this initiative to reinforce the electricity interconnections between the countries around the Baltic Sea. |
