Preview and reports of a referendum held in Switzerland on the 28 November 2010. Voters were asked to support the mandatory deportation of foreigners convicted of serious crimes. While the list includes offences such as rape and burglary, it also embraces non-violent actions, including drug dealing and social security abuse. At stake were two proposals to crack down on criminals without Swiss citizenship. The rightwing Swiss People's Party collected more than 210,000 signatures in support of the mandatory deportation of foreign criminals. Critics argue the initiative went against the constitution, a key accord with the European Union and international law. A majority in parliament, mainly from centre-right parties, agreed on an alternative proposal which gives a detailed list of crimes meriting expulsion and includes measures to boost integration of foreigners. Swiss voters could approve both versions but also make clear which they prefer. In the event the Swiss people voted to adopt the tough new regulations on the deportation of foreigners convicted of serious crimes and welfare fraud. Final results showed 53% voting in favour of a rightwing initiative. The initiative also won the backing of 20 out of 26 cantons. |
