In a referendum held in Switzerland on the 28 February 2016 voters rejected on a proposal to automatically deport foreign criminals for even minor offences. The 'Popular initiative' had been put forward by the anti-immigrant Swiss People's Party(SVP), but opposed by the the government, parliament and all the other major political parties, which said it circumvented fundamental rules of democracy. In an earlier referendum in 2010 Swiss voters had backed strengthening rules to automatically expel foreign nationals convicted of violent or sexual crimes. The SVP had protested at the length of time this recommendation had taken to be enacted into law in 2015, and called for a substantive strengthening of the law. Subsequently, on the 1 March 2016 Christoph Blocher, a leading figure in the SVP called on his party to stop using people’s initiatives to shape its policies, now that the party had two cabinet ministers in the government. However, already in the pipeline were people’s initiatives to reintroduce border controls in Switzerland as well as an initiative against face coverings in public places– the 'burka ban'. [Note that three other votes took place in separate referendums in Switzerland on the 28 February 2016 - see the related url hyperlinks for details]. |
