The EU’s data protection supervisors have ruled that the transfer of personal banking data to the US authorities by the financial network SWIFT is illegal and should be stopped. The Article 29 Working Party did not say when the transfers should stop but added it wanted a clarification on the role of the European Central Bank, which was told about the transfers but did not notify the relevant authorities in the EU or Belgium, where SWIFT is based. OLAF, the European Union’s anti-fraud office, has concluded that six officials of the Committee of the Regions (CoR) may have breached criminal law in claiming allowances. |
