Sweden released on 19 October 2014 a grainy photo of a mysterious vessel in waters around Stockholm, as its military hunted for a foreign submarine in the country's biggest mobilisation of the kind since the Cold War. A local newspaper said authorities had intercepted a distress signal in Russian. The Russian defence ministry denied that any of the country's submarines was involved in the situation. The Swedish Armed Forces announced on the 21 October 2014 that if they found a suspected foreign vessel in the Stockholm archipelago, they were prepared to force it to the surface 'with weapons if necessary'. On the 24 October 2014 it was announced by the Swedish military that it had called off its week-long search for a suspected submarine in the sea south of Stockholm. Swedish Prime Minister Stefan Löfven officially confirmed the 'illegal' incursion of a foreign submarine in national waters on the 14 November 2014 and stated that Sweden would defend its borders 'with all available means'. |
