Summary: Agreement establishing a strategic partnership between the European Union and the Republic of the Gambia in the field of fisheries. Further information: The Agreement between the European Economic Community and the Government of the Republic of the Gambia on fishing off the Gambia entered into force on 2 June 1987. Following negotiations between the European Commission and the Gambia, a new Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement and implementing Protocol were initialled on 19 October 2018. The main aim of the new Agreement is to provide an updated framework taking into account the priorities of the reformed Common Fisheries Policy and its external dimension. The aim of the Protocol is to grant fishing opportunities to Union vessels in Gambian waters taking into account available scientific assessments, in particular those of the Fishery Committee for the Eastern Central Atlantic (CECAF), and in accordance with the best available scientific advice and the recommendations of the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas (ICCAT). On 12 March 2019 the Commission presented proposals on the signing and conclusion of the Agreement, and on the allocation of fishing opportunities under the Protocol. The signing of the Agreement and the allocation of fishing opportunities were approved on 25 June by Council Decision (EU) 2019/1332 and Council Regulation (EU) 2019/1333. Council Decision (EU) 2020/392 on the conclusions of the Agreement was adopted on 5 March 2020. |
