Sustainability and socio-economic need in the common fisheries policy

Considers the twin objectives of the Common Fisheries Policy (CFP), namely EU food security and protecting the livelihoods of EU fishing communities. Describes the development of the Commission's integrated maritime policy (IMP) and its partial implementation by Directive 2008/56 (Marine Strategy Framework Directive). Discusses sustainability and exploitation, with reference to international agreements. Argues that the policy objectives of the CFP and the IMP are incompatible.
