Summary: In 2024, the EU-US economic relationship was the world’s largest – the value of traded goods and services was more than €1 trillion per year, and each was the other’s largest partner in both trade and investment. The EU had over time become increasingly dependent on the US to soak up its exports and mitigate the effect of austerity and stagnant European consumption. The bipartisan shift in the US towards protectionism and reindustrialisation therefore posed a huge challenge for the European economy. |
